George Whitman – An American In Paris

Yesterday, just after posting my post about Fitzgerald books I learned that George Withman, the owner of Shakespeare and Co (my favorite bookshop) had died on December 14th. My thoughts goes to his daughter Sylvia and his whole family.

Shakespeare and Co is one of the most beautiful spot in Paris, it’s a must-see. From now on, I’ll be sad when I go there. I truly think that George was one of the happiest man in the whole world and was also a kind person. He was very passionate by literature and you could just feel it in the shop.

Have nothing else to add but this wonderful quote : “I wanted a bookstore because the book business is the business of life.” – George Whitman (December 12, 1913 – December 14, 2011)

  1. That is such a wonderful quote! I only found out about Shakespeare and Co after I moved from Belgium to Australia two years ago, and I’ve been meaning to go to Paris and hoping to see George Withman in his shop ever since. I’m so sorry to hear that that is not possible anymore now. My condolences to his family and all those who knew him.
